With the title, you might be thinking that I am going to talk about mythology in this article. Sorry to disappoint you but I am not going to talk about any baptist movement or any Hindu goddesses. although I am going to talk about a very close companion to the Greek God of sky ZEUS, NIKE, the goddess of victory, also surprisingly known as the barefoot goddess. You may know Nike as a cool sneaker brand often associated with sports world god-like icons Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, LeBron James, Roger Federer, and numerous more.
At this point, you might be having thoughts that why with these sports G.O.A.T, am I talking about greek mythological gods. Here is a very interesting story that NIKE was named after a dream. Not that "ONE DAY I AM GOING TO BE A SUPERSTAR" kind of dream but an actual dream.
Phil Knight, founder of NIKE had a deadline to name his company and even on the last day when he was going to launch his brand, he had no name for his sneakers. He just had two titles, Dimension Six and Falcon. He then asked his team to select a name. But during the final hours of the decision, a close associate Johnson called and said that he had a dream that they should name the brand "NIKE". Like other popular brands, NIKE was short and easy to pronounce. Also, Phil often used to ask himself, "What is our aim?" Got an answer in one word, "VICTORY". Phil says that at the moment when Johnson told him about his dream, he might have also recalled the victory medal awarded to all veterans of World War II, a bronze medallion with Athena Nike on the front, breaking a sword in two. So call it luck, a coincidence, and instinct, or maybe goddess Nike bestowed her blessings on the sneaker's brand as Johnson had a vision, and goddess came herself to them in a form of glorious victory. Whatever was the reason, it's a relief that our favorite brand is not known after a bird or some dimensions.
Shoe Dog is a memoir and story of Nike by founder Phil Knight himself, that how it became one of the best sneakers brands in the world. Phil Knight in his book says, “You are remembered for the rules you break.” To know what many rules did Phil breaks in order to make NIKE one of most the valuable brands, read Shoe Dog By Phil Knight.
